Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a much bigger area than only the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get included before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
