Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the vicinity most probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't observed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a considerably larger area than just the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen increased development in current times.
