Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts found reveal that they were settling the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the coming decades and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen improved development in the past several years.
