Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were inhabiting the area more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a substantially larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the ensuing years and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in the past few decades.
