Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands next to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were settling the locale most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a much wider area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen greater development in the past few years.
