Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't listed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a way greater area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get appended before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the ensuing decades and the development of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in recent times.
