Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up nearby show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were staying in the area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far bigger area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
