The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins found in close proximity offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a much larger area than only the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming years and the construction of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's seen improved development in the last few years.
