Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage found in the area offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were residing in the area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't referred to till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much wider area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen improved development in current times.
