Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the area perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a significantly wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen greater development in the past several years.
