Located in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a far larger area compared to the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
