Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed denote that they were staying in the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a far greater area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
