Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins unearthed near by give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village as such isn't described till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a way larger area than merely the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
