Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled upon near by offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found denote that they were residing in the vicinity more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was isn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way wider area than only the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the coming generations and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
