Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered nearby show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot wider area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
