Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot larger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the coming decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
