Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins found nearby give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the local area quite likely from the sixth century. The village as such isn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a lot greater area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen greater development in modern times.
