Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage found nearby show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the area most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a considerably greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
