Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics discovered mean that they were inhabiting the locale probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a far bigger area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be appended till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed greater development in the past several years.
