Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to Roman times, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were staying in the region in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly bigger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the following generations and the building of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's witnessed increased development in the recent past.
