Located in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins picked up in the area give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the region more than likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't described until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way wider area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
